The project is designed to develop four-quadrant-speed-control system for a DC motor with PWM. The motor is operated in four quadrants ie, clockwise; counter clock-wise, forward brake and reverse brake. Four-quadrant operation of a DC motor is best suited for industries wherein motors are use das perthe requirement. They can rotate in clockwise, counter-clockwise directions. Also one can apply brakes for instantaneous stop in both the directions. In case of specific operation in industrial environment, a motor needs to be stopped immediately. In such a scenario, this proposed system is very useful as forward brake and reverse brake are its integral features. The instantaneous brake in both the directions is possible due to the application of reverse voltage to the running DC motor for a brief period. The speed control of the motor is also be achieved with the PWM pulses generated by the microcontroller. The microcontroller used in this project is from the 8051 family. Few push buttons interfaced to the microcontroller are provided for the operation of the motor and for the input signal to the motor and in turn control the speed of the motor through the motor driver IC. The speed control feature by the push button operation is also available in this project. This project can be enhanced by using high power electronic devices to operate high capacity DC motors. Regenerative braking for optimizing power consumption can also be incorporated.
